Have you decided it’s time to junk your car? Selling it to a junkyard or junk car company is sometimes the most lucrative option and there are some steps you can take to streamline the process.
Look at these 4 tips to ensure you have a hassle-free transaction.
An online search of car buyers in your area will lead you to a list of businesses that want to help take your car of your hands. Take some time to find a reputable business you want to work with. Find out what preparation requirements are in place; does the junkyard dismantle the vehicle, or will you be given more money if you do it? Should you get rid of the car’s tires, or will the junkyard do that for you?
Find out how much you’ll be given for your car too. Shop around! The nearest junkyard may offer you a fair price, but one on the other side of town might give you twice the amount. Don’t agree to the first offer you’re given.
You will find a junkyard that offers you cash for your car, but they’ll expect it to be free of your belongings. While it may be tempting to leave trash and other items in the vehicle, this can throw a wrench in the process of selling your junk car. This is your last shot to check the normal spots like your glove box and console, and look under your floor mats and seats, too. Don’t forget to remove your insurance cards – they have personal information on them you don’t want to leave behind. It’s your responsibility to take out anything that is yours before the tow truck comes to haul away your junk car.
Take the time to cancel your car insurance and remove and turn in your license plates. The most important thing to do is to transfer ownership of your vehicle to the junkyard. For you to sign your old vehicle over to the junk car removal company, you need a valid title. If you don’t give the junkyard ownership of the car, any future liabilities will be considered your responsibility even if you no longer possess it. Check online with your local department of motor vehicles to see exactly what the rules and regulations are related to selling your car to a junkyard.
If the price of the car was agreed upon with the junk car removal company, you need to make sure the car is in the same condition as when the deal was locked into place. However, if that’s not the case, you might be able to make some money selling a stereo or GPS system. If the junkyard plans to scrap the tires, see if you can sell those too. Don’t leave anything of value in your car – instead, sell it to make some extra cash.
If your car is no longer worth fixing and you’ve deemed it a junk car, a junkyard will gladly take it off your hands. Once you decide which junkyard you’re selling your car to and get a quote you are happy with, you can take the necessary steps to rid yourself of the car and put some cash back in your pocket.
